A mother and her three children have died after a fire razed their house in Kiamasagara Village,Bonyando, Bonchari constituency, Kisii County.
The fire incident as witnessed by the villagers was said to have broken out Wednesday night as the family slept.
The incident left three children identified as Cindy 10, William Onderi 9 and Shantel Kemunto 4 dead by suffocation out of the fumes from the burning mattresses.
The fourth, Juma, 6 months, is being attended at the Kisii Referral Hospital.
Their mother, Carol Nyaboke 38, died as she was being rushed to hospital for treatment.
John Ayago family spokesman said the fire started from where the children were sleeping before quickly spreading to other parts of the house.
“The mother tried to get out through a hole drilled by villagers but it appears the burns were severe and she died on the way to hospital,” he said.
Kisii South OCPD Charles Machinji said investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital waiting for postmortem.
